Sixty-One displaced communities in Kaduna State receive cash, dignity kits from
ActionAid Nigeria, Global Peace Development
ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) and her local partner Global Peace Development (GPD),
with funding support from STARTFUND provide emergency relief materials to
three thousand (3,000) women-led households across sixty-one communities
displaced by banditry and temporarily living in host communities in Kaduna State.
Speaking in Kaduna, AAN’s Country Director, Ene Obi ably represented by the
Resilience Programme Coordinator, Anicetus Atakpu said “Within the last two
weeks, ActionAid Nigeria and our Kaduna State local partner, GPD visited two
local government areas hosting 61 displaced communities. These are
communities displaced because of the banditry attacks recorded in Kaduna State
in the past six months. As a result, families left their homes and possessions and
are now in dire need of emergency humanitarian relief.
Ahead of the intervention, Mr. Atakpu noted that ActionAid and GPD trained 60
enumerators on data collection methodology, thereby leading to the registration
of 5,812 households across 61 communities. This figure includes 2,956
households across 29 communities in Kachia LGA and 2,856 households across 32
communities Kajuru LGA. However, AAN only catered to 3,000 families across the
two LGAs.
According to Ms. Ene, “Following the influx of the displaced population into
various surrounding villages and communities and the apparent water shortage
and scarcity in some host communities, ActionAid and GPD promptly conducted a
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sensitization for sixty representatives of
the communities. The WASH sensitization included COVID-19 messaging in line
with WHO and NCDC advisory. In addition, on Saturday, 20th August 2022, three
thousand households received cash for food worth N54,000,000 at N18,000 each;
1,800 households received Non-Food Items worth N25,110,000 at N13, 950 each
and 1,500 others received dignity kits worth N13,350,000 at N8,900 each.
ActionAid Nigeria is hopeful the cash will enable beneficiaries to address their varied needs and utilize available resources appropriately for the sustainability of
their families.’’
ActionAid Nigeria’s Resilience Coordinator, Anicetus Atakpu explained that
ActionAid wishes to support all individuals affected in one form or another, but
the available funds could only go round three thousand people conveniently. He
applauds the commitment of Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency and
the Local Government Offices to the plight of its citizenry affected by Banditry and
Communal conflicts. However, he reiterated that ”Kaduna State requires extra
support, particularly in helping the displaced communities rebuild their lives.
Therefore, within the next few days, sixty representatives of the communities will
also be trained in Disaster Risk Reduction.”
ActionAid Nigeria’s Country Director, Ms. Ene Obi concluded by calling on Kaduna State Government to expedite actions in curbing insecurity in the State to enable people to return to their homes and properties.
