DEMOCRACY DAY 2026: KONGONET DEMANDS ELECTORAL REFORMS, MEDIA FREEDOM, AND RULE OF LAW
As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET) says June 12 must be more than a date on the calendar. It should be a test of how well leaders respect the people’s mandate, protect civic space, and deliver accountable governance.
KONGONET acknowledges 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule since 1999, but warns that elections every 4 years are not democracy. Citizens must feel it through transparent use of public funds, respect for human rights, and real participation in governance.
*Electoral Integrity*
With Kogi LG polls approaching, KONGONET urges SIEC to ensure a level playing field, publish clear guidelines early, and run elections that all parties can trust. INEC and other electoral bodies must also show independence, professionalism, and fairness.
Security & Neutrality
Security agencies including the Police, NSCDC, and DSS must remain neutral and professional. Their duty is to protect voters, candidates, journalists, and observers — not intimidate them.
No Misuse of State Assets
Government vehicles, security, public facilities, state media, and funds must not be used to favor any party. If made available, access must be fair and rule-based.
Media Freedom
KONGONET condemns the reported arrest and detention of Mr. Opeyemi Owoeye, Editor of Kogi Reports, by NSCDC operatives. We insist: grievances belong in court, not in detention cells. Press freedom, free speech, and protection of whistleblowers are non-negotiable in a democracy.
Call to Action
Government, legislature, SIEC, political parties, security agencies, media, CSOs, traditional rulers, youth, women, PWDs, and citizens must work together to rebuild trust. For June 12 to mean anything, votes must count, institutions must work, and public power must serve the people.
