Heavy Drinking of Alcohol, Smoking, drug and substance abuse has been linked to increased rate of Cancer Amongst Women.
A Medical Expert, Dr. Jimmy Idama, made the disclosure at a Breast Cancer Awareness Program Organised by Life Care Foundation held at the GYB Model Secondary School, Adankolo, Lokoja.
Dr. Idama described the consequences of heavy indulgence to drinking, Drug and Substance abuse by women as discovery for high rate of Breast Cancer amongst the women folks now are days.
Dr. Idama lamented the display of smoking, drinking and substance abuse in major films makers watched by young people and women, thus making the girl child believe that it is a norm to indulge in such social activities with grave consequences.
The Medical Practitioner however described early detection as the best option to treating breast cancer, urged for vigilance and for women to seek right medical attention.
” Aside knowing the early signs, Dr Idama urged women to seek the help of medical and qualified health personnel, lamented that most women are quick to seek help from traditional medicine men, making it late and irreversible when they come to the hospital.
Dr. Idama called on women to look out for lumps on their breasts, whether it is swollen or painful, if the nipples is discharging water, if one Breast is bigger than the other or is drifting away from it normal position as Red flags. Similarly, if the breasts begins to itch in very awkward ways, or changes colours.
Dr. Idama advised women on coming to the hospital early for scientific examination, cautioned against patronizing traditional rulers, rather they should seek the help of qualified health personnel.
Yunusa Asuku Usman, Chairman, Life Care Foundation, an NGO set up to support the vulnerable and less privileged in the society to help bring them out of their challenges.
Yunusa described the rate of death caused women by reason of Breast Cancer as a big challenge to the country, most especially that people are refusing to own up, talk about it, see it as something private to them.
Yunusa advised women on having the right perspectives about breast cancer said it is becoming a killer disease, urged women to always take their health seriously through regular checks and screening to stay alive.
