I write to urgently address the growing security concerns that have been plaguing the Bunu Axis in recent days, particularly in light of the increased presence of hostile elements, as well as the escalating threats to the safety and wellbeing of our people. The recent cold-blooded murder in Odo-Ape, my ancestral home as a good reference point.
The situation demands a strategic and comprehensive response, with a focus on not only reinforcing military presence but also fostering community-driven solutions for lasting peace.
*Rationale for Increased Security Architecture*:
The current state of security within the district is untenable. The rise in criminal activities, including the infiltration of uninvited foreign elements, has placed an undue burden on the lives and livelihoods of our people. The recent reports indicate an intensifying level of threat, both from external forces and local criminal syndicates. The need for immediate and sustained intervention cannot be overstated.
As such, there is a compelling need for:
*1) Increased Military Presence*:
The presence of the 12 Brigade Combat Ready personnel stationed in Lokoja provides an excellent opportunity to expand their operations to cover the Bunu Axis more comprehensively. This will involve not only securing key strategic locations but also establishing a robust perimeter of patrols and checkpoints to prevent any further infiltration of hostile forces. The increased deployment of military personnel is an immediate necessity to ensure public safety and order.
*2) Strengthened Local Security Architecture*:
It is imperative that we leverage the role of our traditional rulers, community leaders, and local security forces, such as vigilantes and hunters, to supplement the efforts of our formal security agencies. These local forces have invaluable knowledge of the terrain and can play a crucial role in detecting and preventing criminal activities. As such, it is vital that we mobilize local funding to better equip and support these groups in their efforts to safeguard our communities.
*3) Community Engagement and Collaboration*:
Our traditional rulers, as custodians of the community’s welfare, must come together to deliberate and recommend local solutions to this persistent issue. The solution will not only involve military intervention but also a concerted effort to foster collaboration between local authorities, security agencies, and community members. A collective effort grounded in mutual trust and shared responsibility is essential in curbing the tide of insecurity.
