Senator Umeh Receives Senate Press Corps Award For Responsive Representation

The senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District in the Senate, Senator Victor Umeh, has been conferred with an award of excellence for “Responsive Representation for Good Governance” by the Senate Press Corps, a group of media professionals covering parliamentary activities in the Red Chamber of the National Assembly.

Umeh, a chieftain of Labour Party (LP), was presented with the award at the occasion of the 2024 Senate Press Corps Awards of Excellence held in the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall of NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja, and organised to honour Distinguished Senators who have shown proactive leadership, legislative excellence and quality representation.

The Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, a former member of the Senate, while presenting the award plaque to Umeh, spoke glowingly of the Chairman Senate Committee on Diaspora matters and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

The event was chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, ably represented by Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Senate Committee Chairman on Media and Publicity.

Speaking after receiving the award, the Anambra Central Senator, known to be a media-friendly politician, said: “I thank the Senate Press Corps for finding me worthy to be named the recipient of this award. This is an endorsement that I’m up and about in the business of the Senate and legislative work. I know all of you individually and collectively because I interact with you. I grant interviews to you. You come to me in my office from time to time to get clarifications on certain issues.

“Thank you very much for this event. This award will definitely spur me on. Having succeeded in winning this award this year, it is my desire that I will not let the Senate Press Corps down. I will continue to engage very robustly in the activities of the Senate and in supporting bills, motions and actions that will promote the wellbeing of Nigerians.”

The Ohamadike Ndigbo added that “Wherever we fail you in our activities, just know that we are also human, and sometimes we can make mistakes. But our intention in the 10th Senate led by His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, is to contribute to nation-building and make lives better for ordinary Nigerians. On that note, I dedicate this award to all Nigerians.”

Described as one of the most vibrant and performing senators in the tenth Senate, Umeh, a good governance, social justice and peace advocate, deeply concerned about the plight of the people of his constituency and Nigeria in general, had previously earned several awards for his unwavering commitment towards the growth of humanity and outstanding performance in public service.

Just few days ago, the Anambra State Chapter of the Ohanaeze Worldwide honoured him with an award of excellence as best performing senator. In 2023, Umeh, a renowned statesman, bagged UN’s Prestigious Mayor For World Peace Award presented to him by the United Nations, Peace and Positive Living Awareness Centre (UN-PEPOLAC).

In his 17-month sojourn in the 8th Senate, the accomplished estate manager, surveyor and valuer turned politician, won an award for moving the best motion on the floor of the Senate in year 2018. The said award was bestowed on him by the same Senate Press Corps for his motion on ‘Illegal Confinement of Underage Children of Nigeria Below the Age of 16 in Prisons with Adult Inmates.’

Umeh has made significant impact on the lives of constituents with the facilitation of people-oriented projects and programmes to his constituency. Just in September this year, he offered scholarships to 223 members of his constituency for their university education. He had in the past through his Victor Umeh Education Foundation (VUMEF) put smiles on the faces of many indigent Nigerians who ordinarily would not have been able to see the four walls of tertiary institution as a result of financial challenges.
