NUJ Passes Vote of confidence in credentials com’tee ahead of  conference

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has unanimously passed a vote of confidence in its Credentials Committee, applauding the committee’s commitment to due process and adherence to the NUJ constitution.

The vote of confidence which was passed during a virtual NEC meeting follows a critical review of the committee’s actions as it prepares for the upcoming Triennial Delegate Conference scheduled for November 26-28, 2024, in Owerri, Imo State.

The NEC acknowledged the Credentials Committee’s efforts to ensure transparency and fairness in finalizing delegates’ lists across councils nationwide, a process the council deemed impartial and consistent with the union’s guiding principles.

Similarly, the NEC also recognized the vital role of the NUJ Advisory Council, composed of former leaders, whose intervention helped resolve pre-election concerns and provided valuable resolutions.

In a move to resolve longstanding issues, the NEC approved November 16 as the date for the Benue Council election, marking an end to the prolonged leadership crisis in that council. Reflecting on broader national concerns, the NEC expressed deep worry over Nigeria’s economic downturn and escalating inflation, urging the Federal Government to take decisive action to alleviate the hardships faced by citizens.

The NEC also condemned the delay in October salary payments to federal workers, including employees of Radio Nigeria, calling the situation unacceptable given the already difficult economic conditions impacting workers nationwide.

In a show of solidarity, the NEC extended condolences to President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Army on the recent passing of General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff. Additionally, the NEC cautioned all candidates and their supporters in the upcoming NUJ elections to avoid defamatory tactics, underscoring the need for professionalism and unity within the union.

The communique, signed by National Secretary Achike Chude, was drafted by Abubakar Musa Waziri, National Ex-Officio Zone E; Princess Ronke Samo, Vice President Zone B; and Mary Domtur, Secretary Plateau Council, reaffirming the NEC’s commitment to upholding NUJ values in the face of evolving challenges.

End.
