As Monarch harps on Science Education for Girl-Child

The Kogi State Community and Social Development Agency has continued to Inaugurate more projects under the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (N-Cares) Program, on Tuesday commissioned two blocks of classrooms, a Science Laboratory, and Borehole donated by the agency to St. Monica’s College, Kabba.

The General Manager of the Agency, Chief Dauda Momoh while commissioning the project at the school premises said the projects was aimed at developing rural communities as well as improving learning in science education.

Chief Momoh said the agency gives priority to schools located in rural communities of the state as some of them lack the necessary infrastructure; a development he said may also affect the performance of students.

“Some of us are products of community schools and we had nasty experiences due to lack of science equipment which led to poor performances in practical. So we understand what students in such schools suffer.

The Traditional ruler of the community, HRM Oba Solomon Owoniyi, the Obaro of Kabba urged the school to place emphasis on science courses for the girl-child.

Oba Owoniyi said, “The girl-child must be encouraged to participate in science subjects and courses. Schools should concentrate more on the sciences expecially for the girl-child – so that they can compete favourably in the technological world.”

He said lack of laboratory and laboratory equipment in public schools had impacted negatively on science education which he described as the bedrock of development.

He however called on good spirited individuals to lend their hands to lift science and technology education expecially in St. Monica’s and other girl schools.

The Chairman, Board of Director of the Agency, Mr. Rapheal Okomoda said that the project was meant to build the capacity of the students.

Mr. Okomoda said that human capital development is critical to the development of the society, hence the acceptance of the agency in making sure the projects come to success.

He therefore urged the school to make the best use of the facility, “Let it reflect in the outcome of the science subjects of the students.”

Principal of St. Monacs college, Mrs. Dupe Dada thanked the agency for the kind gesture, said that students of the school will live to remember such benevolence.

“While these projects will be well managed to boast science learning in the school, we seek for more collaboration and help on other projects.”

The project was facilitated by the Family Club (1975) and constructed by Asanta Community in Kabba.
