LET’S TALK ABOUT SANITATION AND CLEAN ENVIRONMENT IN EBIRALAND.

–Say no to open defecation in the community.

By Otori Ozigi

There is a general saying that cleanliness is next to Godliness.

It goes without saying that the importance of a clean environment and healthy sanitation in the life of any community cannot be overemphasiized.

There is no gainsaying that one of the first things a visitor would notice in a place is the state of environment in that given society.

It is a matter of great concern and worry that the general State of our environment in Ebiraland today, leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

The poor hygiene and behavioral tendencies of most of our people leaves much to be desired.

It is a matter of regret that there is still the rampant practice of open defecation among our people in this time and age of civilization.

The relevant local government areas in the land seems to have abdicated their responsibility in ensuring that our people embrace healthy environmental practices.

Recall that there was an era in the community when the presence of sanitation officials, otherwise known as Wole, wole,in the local parlance, was a common feature in the community.

That was in the Sixties,Seventies and early Eighties.

These days most houses in the community have no modern toilets .

One begin to wonder how on earth someone would have money to build a house and would not consider it necessary to make provision for construction of rest rooms.

That our people still engage in open defecation and other unhealthy environmental practices is not a welcome development and should be condemned by all and sundry.

Most markets in the community have no modern toilets .

In a related development, it is still a common practice that most people still bury corpses at home even when there are enough public cemeteries in the community today.

All these unhealthy environmental practices could lead to the spread of water and airborne diseases in the community.

On the whole, our local government areas should be up and doing.

If they can not execute any other capital projects,at least, they should be able to construct toilet utilities in the community.

It behooves on them to enact laws and edicts making it compulsory for every household to have modern toilets.

There should be stiffer penalties for offenders.
.
Let’s say no to open defecation in the community.

Our representatives in the State and National Assemblies should consider the construction of modern toilet utilities in designated places as part of their constituency projects.

It is high time our people should embrace healthy environmental practices as a way of life.

The whole world is leaving us behind in civility and modern behavioral practices.

Say no to open defecation in the community.

Our people deserve a cleaner and healthy environment.

The Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Kogi State, BARR.Momodu Deedat Ozigi should read the riot act to his men at the local government areas to wake up from slumber and do the needful.

To whom much is given, much is expected.
