1. Processed Meat
Eating processed meat can compromise your sperm count. According to a Harvard study (2014), men who consumed processed meat in excess had 23 per cent lower sperm quality than others who ate it in small quantities. In another study of journal of Epidemiology, it was found that processed meat was associated with lower sperm count.
2. Alcohol
One or two alcoholic drinks per day are okay for men, but more than 14 mixed drinks in a week can lower testosterone levels and affect sperm count. In fact, studies show that consistent drinking (five or more drinks in a two-hour time frame) have negative effects on sperm.
3. Trans Fats
Researchers are primarily concerned about trans fats increasing the risk of heart disease. Unfortunately, the concerns don’t stop there. A 2011 Spanish study linked the increased intake of trans fats with decreased sperm counts.
How To Prevent Low Sperm Count
To protect your fertility, avoid known factors that can affect sperm count and quality.
1. Don’t smoke.
2. Limit or abstain from alcohol.
3. Steer clear of illicit drugs.
4. Talk to your doctor about medications that can affect sperm count.
5. Maintain a healthy weight.
6. Avoid heat.
7. Manage stress.
8. Avoid exposure to pesticides, heavy metals and other toxins.
