joshuaCross River: Exciting developments in Yala as road construction begins for Isolated Communities

Residents of Opaka, Ebo, Okpodon, Wanokom, Wanikande, and Uju are filled with joy as construction officially begins on the long-awaited Yahe-Wanokom-Wanikade-Wanihem road in Yala. These agricultural communities have faced years of isolation, struggling with inadequate road access and lacking the basic infrastructure necessary for an improved quality of life. The absence of proper roads has not only hindered transportation but has also limited economic opportunities and access to essential services.
The North Ukelle road, which stretches to the border of Benue State, has remained impassable for several decades. The initial intervention in the early 1990s encountered numerous setbacks and was awarded by the previous administration.
Upon taking office, Senator Bassey Otu assured Cross Riverians that his administration is committed to completing all inherited unfinished projects. During an inspection tour of the Yahe-Wanihem road and other incomplete projects in the state a few months ago, Governor Otu reiterated that work would resume on various road projects across the state. The Yahe-Wanokom-Wanikade road is one of many undergoing rehabilitation, approved by this administration to enhance connectivity and accessibility throughout the region.
Government plans to undertake the 40km road in phases, with the award of the first phase covering 5km. This initial stretch has been strategically divided into critical areas: 1km between Ebo and Ezekwe, 2km between Opaka and Wanokom, and 2km in the Wanikande axis.
Construction has commenced, with groundwork currently underway, opening access to previously unmotorable communities such as Ebo, Opaka, Wanokom, and Wanikade sub-communities. For the first time in decades, a truck drove into these areas to convey farm produce. The construction poses challenges due to its swampy terrain and high water levels; over 1.5 meters of mud was removed to facilitate the laying of sharp sand before progressing with other aggregates.
The excitement was palpable when a truck made its inaugural journey into one of the previously isolated communities, marking a significant milestone for residents. For many children, this was a momentous occasion, as it was the first time they had ever seen a vehicle. This small yet impactful event symbolizes hope and progress for a community that has endured a challenging existence.
In addition to the road groundwork, the construction of hydraulic structures has begun, with concrete work and culverts already in progress. Completion is anticipated within the next 12 months, paving the way for a brighter future for the residents of these communities.
