Chairman LG Service Commission, Nwasum Decries Workers Negligence To Duty In Ebonyi

The Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission in Ebonyi State, Chief Romanus Nwasum has decried the high level of absenteeism and lateness to work by workers in the Local Government Areas and Development Centers in the State.

Chief Nwasum led members of the commission to monitor the level of workers compliance to duties in some Local Government Areas and Development Centers across the three zones of the State.

The Nigerian Post reports that the members of the commission visited; Abakaliki, Ikwo, Afikpo, Ezza South Local Government Areas as well as Ikwo Central, Amoha, Ubenyi, Afikpo North Development Centers among others.

The chairman expressed displeasure on the level of absenteeism and lateness to duty by the workers, especially at Ikwo Central Development Center in Ikwo LGA where they stormed around 11:30am and seen that there was no single staff on ground, even as the DC was still locked with heavy pad lock.

He condemned the situation where workers would be receiving their salaries every month without attending to work.

According to him “We can’t accept this kind of attitude among our workers, how can a worker be paid and he or she can not reciprocate it. Work starts by 8am and closed by 4pm, you need to have attendance register so as to be clocking in and clocking out. Any worker who is not justifying his or her monthly salary will be consider as not being a worker. As a worker you need to be happy that you are employed, there are thousands of people outside there looking for job and haven’t gotten it” he said

The Chairman who further directed all the principal officers to report to the commission tomorrow, enjoined the workers to refrain from such bad attitudes in their own best interest as the State Government wouldn’t tolerate it at all.

He however admonished workers in the State to show high level of commitment and dedication to their duties for optimal service delivery, while expressing the readiness of the State Government under the able leadership of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru to revamping the Local Government System in the State.

At Ubeyi Development Center in Afikpo North Local Government Area, Chief Nwasum commeded the workers for being alive to their duties and urged them to sustain the tempo towards the restoration of the lost glory of the Local Government system.

The Member 1 of the Commission Architect Augstine Nwechara advised the workers to change from their bad attitudes and start coming to work regularly saying that they would continue the monitoring until the set objective is achieved.

On his own part, the Secretary of the Commission Mr Chidozie Igwe described the attitude of the workers as very worrisome and charged them to rise to responsibilities for the betterment of their lives.

Some of the workers who spoke during the monitoring including the NULGE chairman Afikpo Dev. Center Mrs Rita Eleje Ekuma, Director of personnel management in Ikwo LGA Mr Nwankwo Felix, the NULGE Chairman in Ezza South LGA Mr Nweke Ekene all commended the Chairman and members of the Commission for the timely visit and assured to be more dedicated to their duties.
