Hon. Joseph Ikpea has emerged as the consensus candidate for the Edo Central Senatorial by-election following a resounding endorsement by Esan South-East leaders. This significant decision, made during a well-attended ceremony, highlights Ikpea’s extensive experience, dedication to service, and commitment to the progress of Edo Central.
In his address to the gathering, Hon. Joseph Ikpea narrated his political journey and service to Edo State, recounting the path that has shaped his leadership and vision for the future.
“My journey into politics began in 1999 when I contested for the Chairmanship of Esan South-East Local Government,” Ikpea began. “Though I did not win that election, my political structures and grassroots support were recognized by leaders of our great state. It was through that acknowledgment that His Excellency Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion appointed me as Chairman of the Edo State Library Board. That appointment was a turning point in my career, giving me the platform to serve my people and contribute to our educational development.”
He continued, “From that point, I have consistently dedicated myself to public service. I transitioned to the Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) and later became a founding member of the Action Congress (AC). When the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) evolved into the All Progressives Congress (APC), I took on a foundational role, not just as a member, but as one of the major financiers of the party. I worked closely with leaders such as Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Chief Frank Okafi Erewele, Chief Charles Idahosa, Chief Tony Omoaghe, our leader Hon. Victor Eboigbe, and other notable APC figures to build a strong and progressive party that would bring meaningful change to Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.”
Ikpea also emphasized his role in strengthening the APC in Edo State. “My commitment to the APC has always been about ensuring that we build a party with the ideals of good governance, inclusivity, and progress. Let no one tell you otherwise—I have been a part of this journey from the beginning, long before some political scavengers seeking power arrived on the scene,” he said, taking a swipe at detractors.
Ikpea also responded to critics, particularly those he referred to as “scavengers” and “desperate power-seekers,” who were spreading false claims about his political journey.
“These individuals, driven by greed and desperation, are spreading rumors that I am not a politician, or that my elder brother is attempting to use his influence and wealth to push me into this race,” he said. “Let me make this clear: How can a man who has served his people for decades—holding key positions in government and supporting the development of his community—not be considered a politician? And as for the claims about my family’s involvement, let me ask this—shouldn’t my family support me if I’m running for election? It is only someone without a sense of purpose or integrity who would not be backed by their own family. My family’s support is a reflection of their belief in my vision and my ability to lead.”
He highlighted his wealth of professional experience in the oil and gas sector, which spans over three decades.
“My 33 years of service in the oil and gas industry have equipped me with exceptional skills in leadership, strategic planning, and resource management. This experience has shaped my approach to governance and my vision for a prosperous Edo Central,” Ikpea said. “I intend to bring this expertise into the Senate, where I will move motions and sponsor bills that will directly benefit Esan sons and daughters. We need to ensure that our region receives its fair share of development and opportunities.”
Addressing the gathered leaders and supporters, Ikpea shared his vision for impactful representation.
“If elected as your Senator, I will prioritize youth empowerment, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development. My commitment is to deliver results that will positively impact every Esan son and daughter, both at home and abroad,” he promised.
Ikpea concluded by calling for unity. “Together, we can make history. Together, we can achieve progress for our people. Let us stand united and work for the betterment of Edo Central,” he declared to thunderous applause.
Leaders from across Esan South-East reaffirmed their support for Hon. Ikpea. Hon. Victor Eboigbe, the overall leader of the local government, praised Ikpea’s track record.

The LGA APC Chairman also commended Ikpea’s dedication, saying, “He has been a pillar of the APC from its inception. His candidacy represents the progress and stability we all desire for Edo Central.”
Hon. Sunny Ojiezele (Ikpenome), the member representing Esan South-East Constituency, expressed his unwavering support and made a ₦1 million donation to the campaign.
“Hon. Ikpea is a visionary leader and a true son of Esan. His emergence as our consensus candidate is a step in the right direction, and I have no doubt he will represent us with excellence in the Senate,” Ojiezele said.
