Be conscious of your reportage so as not to instigate conflict – Mall. Abidu Yazid tasks Media Practitioners.


 

Media Practitioners have once again been asked to be conscious of their reportage so as not to instigate conflict.

 

Mall. Abidu Yazid, Chairman, Board Directors, Savannah Centre For Diplomacy and Development and Advocacy, Mediation and Reconciliation Council Co-chair gave the advice at a one day
Community Initiatives To Promote Peace (CIPP), with the theme: Fostering an enabling environment for peace in Nigeria, organized by Savannah Centre for Diplomacy and Development holding at the Transcorp Hillton Abuja.

 

Represented by Amb. Sanni Bala, Executive Director, SCDDD, Mall. Abidu Yazid, urged the media to always identify what is good for the public and also be mindful of the timing of such news.

 

While pointing out that no Journalists worth his salt would spread falsehood and misinformation, however said no matter what truth, with facts a Journalists may have made public, said there are still some truth that the public cannot handle.

He appealed to the media to be conscious of their roles as very sensitive in conflict reporting, said as practitioners people see what Media Practitioners publish and dish out to the public as the gospel truth.

In his remarks at the occasion, Ndubisi Anyanwu, Country Director Mercy Corps Nigeria, expressed optimism that the meeting which seeks to bring together lawmakers and the media is to help in significantly reducing conflict through law making and reportage.

He urged for laws and reportage to be conflict sensitive, urged the lawmakers and the media to used the platform created to reduce and to respond to violent extremism.

He noted that in a peaceful and secured environment, $13billion would be added to the GDP of the North Central States where the CIPP project is being implemented geared towards empowering a resilient and secured country.

David Gatare, Chief of Party Community Initiatives to promote Peace, Mercy Corps, said the role of the media and lawmakers in reducing conflict cannot be over emphasized, said Mercy Corps is concerned about promoting peace and conflict sensitive communities.

He mentioned ethnic, religious, farmers and herders conflict as some identified conflicts in the area where the CIPP is implemented, said Mercy Corps looks forward to efforts at early warning and response to prevent conflict… Continue reading
