The ban on charcoal production in kogi state by the commissioner of Environment on behalf of the Government has been described as an after thought and a misplacement of priority.
Comr. Idris Miliki, Executive Director, Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution made the disclosure in a statement, said the media report banning the production of charcoal in the last few days suggest that those who came up with that reactionary pronouncement are not in tune with the reality of the situation on the ground.
The Activists wondered In the first instance if the production of charcoal is on in kogi state?
He also asked if the state is in a military regime in kogi state for such a great draconian policy?
He said despite the numerous environmental challenges facing the state that is not being attended to by the ministry of environment, expressed dismay that there was no stakeholder meeting that agreed on that draconian policy, lamented that it was never discoursed at the state executive council meeting.
He therefore wondered ” how someone can wake up to say no one can transport charcoal across the 21 local government areas in the state.
He called on the state governor to talk to his appointees to consult widely before making policies that doesn’t have any meaningful impact and unsustainable on the people.
According to Comr. Miliki, ” If the people can produce charcoal, why can’t they buy and bring to the State for their usage. If any one travels to the federal capital territory, charcoal is found every where. We call on the commissioner and the ministry of environment to reason and recind this unpopular policy of banning of production, transportation, usage of charcoal in the state, in the interest of people peace, peace and the economic realities in Nigeria and Kogi state.
A government that is paying percentage salaries can not sustain such unpopular and reactionary policy.
