Federal University Lokoja Students Laud Governor Ododo for Signing Law Restricting Daytime Truck Movement in Felele

Your Excellency,

On behalf of the entire student body of Federal University Lokoja, and indeed the residents of Felele and the wider Lokoja community, I, Comrade Benjamin Olorunfemi Timothy Omeiza, President of the Student Union Government (SUG), extend our deepest appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, for your bold and visionary action in signing into law the restriction of daytime truck movement in the Felele axis of Lokoja.

A Significant Step Towards Safer Roads

This landmark legislation, prompted by the tragic incident of February 17th, 2024, is not just a legal document, it is a decisive move to safeguard lives and restore public confidence in road safety within Lokoja. The loss and trauma of that day remain fresh in our collective memory, but your swift and compassionate response has brought comfort, assurance, and renewed hope to our community.

By addressing the long-standing concerns around heavy-duty truck movements in a densely populated area, Your Excellency has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to the safety and welfare of your people. This measure will significantly reduce the risks associated with uncontrolled vehicular activity during peak hours, particularly for students, pedestrians, and other road users.

A Government That Listens and Acts

This proactive policy is a reflection of a responsive and people-centered administration, one that values human life above convenience. With this law, students can move more freely and safely across campus and adjoining areas; parents can be at greater ease knowing their children are better protected, and the entire community can begin to experience an improvement in both traffic flow and general well-being.

Your action speaks volumes of an administration that is not only aware of the needs of its people but is also resolute in responding effectively. It is a powerful testament to your commitment to good governance, accountability, and inclusive leadership.

Acknowledging Strategic Support and Partnerships

We also wish to express our sincere gratitude to the Management of Federal University Lokoja for their tireless efforts and partnership in championing student safety.

Our appreciation goes to the Speaker and Members of the Kogi State House of Assembly for their legislative responsiveness and for expediting the passage of this critical bill. Their unity and resolve in protecting the lives of their constituents is truly commendable.

We equally recognize the extraordinary roles played by the Hon. Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Monday Aridaojo Anyebe, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth and Women Mobilization, Hon. Charity Ijese Omole. In the immediate aftermath of the February 17th incident, their hands-on support and presence, rushing victims to the hospital, comforting grieving families, and staying with us through the mourning period demonstrated compassion, courage, and true servant leadership. Their assurance of the Governor’s support and their guidance in ensuring peaceful student engagement during that period will forever be remembered with gratitude.

We also extend our profound appreciation to the Security Adviser to the Governor, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), whose timely intervention and calm demeanor were instrumental in de-escalating tensions during a highly sensitive period. His professionalism, empathy, and strategic coordination helped to maintain peace and order while ensuring that student voices were heard and respected. His role in bridging communication between the student body and relevant authorities cannot be overstated and deserves our deepest commendation.

Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to the Chairman of Lokoja Local Government, whose unwavering support and attention to community concerns have further reinforced our collective drive for a safer and more peaceful Lokoja.

Our Commitment to Supporting the Law

As students and residents, we pledge our full cooperation in ensuring the successful implementation of this law. We shall continue to sensitize our members and the general public on the importance of compliance for the greater good of all.

Your Excellency, your action is not only a response to tragedy; it is a demonstration of purpose-driven leadership. This law will undoubtedly become a cornerstone of your enduring legacy, a legacy built on compassion, responsiveness, and a deep-seated commitment to human life and dignity.

Thank you for listening. Thank you for acting.

Yours in service,
Comrade Benjamin Olorunfemi Timothy Omeiza
President, Student Union Government
