OGBO: A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS

When Robert Oxton Bolt titled his 1954 play A Man for All Seasons, he referred to Sir Thomas More—an English lawyer, judge, statesman, and Renaissance humanist whose steadfast character transcended the turbulent political currents of his day.

Ironically, Bolt’s phrase now finds a fitting application here in Nigeria, embodied by Dr. Usman Ogbo: an astute political economist, seasoned technocrat, dedicated mentor, and emerging political figure whose administrative prowess knows no equal.

Dr. Usman Ogbo’s journey began in modest surroundings, yet from an early age he demonstrated an uncommon blend of vision and integrity. Over the course of his career, every role he assumed became a platform for excellence.

Whether in public service or academia, Dr. Ogbo’s leadership left indelible footprints: policies he championed, programs he launched, and institutional reforms he implemented continue to benefit countless Nigerians today.

Like Sir Thomas More, Dr. Ogbo possesses a crystalline conviction in his principles. He refuses to waver, even when faced with immense pressure. This single-minded commitment to service is most vividly on display in his tenure as Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.

When Dr. Ogbo assumed office, the Polytechnic community was grappling with a backlog of unimplemented staff promotions. Morale was low, and uncertainty reigned over the campus. Drawing upon his hallmark discipline and emotional intelligence, Dr. Ogbo forged a productive working relationship with His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, then Governor of Kogi State and a leading APC aspirant.

Through persistent advocacy and transparent negotiations, he secured approval for all pending promotions. As a result, salaries were backdated immediately, and eligible staff members saw their pay, allowances, and career progression finally reflected on their monthly remittances.

The elation among Polytechnic staff cannot be overstated. Families who had anxiously awaited promotion-related benefits erupted in joyous celebration once payments were confirmed.

From senior lecturers to administrative officers, every member of the academic community felt the impact. But more than a financial victory, this achievement validated Dr. Ogbo’s philosophy: that no challenge is insurmountable when one leads with both competence and genuine concern for others.

What sets Dr. Ogbo apart is not merely his effectiveness, but his unwavering humility. Though he stands head and shoulders above his peers in professional acumen, his interpersonal warmth never falters.

To him, every individual—young or old, student or staff, technocrat or traditional leader—is inherently equal. This egalitarian sensibility allows him to bridge generational divides, earning admiration not only from seasoned elders but also from the tech-savvy youth who will one day steer Nigeria forward. He is, in every sense, a “man for all seasons.”

At Kogi State Polytechnic, Dr. Ogbo envisions transformation that extends far beyond the classroom. He understands that tomorrow’s leaders must harness both experience and innovation.

Thus, he cultivates dialogue between veteran academics and budding scholars; he endorses cutting-edge research even as he preserves time-honored traditions of integrity and discipline. In his view, this synergy of wisdom and creativity will chart a course toward a more prosperous, empowered society.

In the annals of Nigerian public service, few figures encapsulate the spirit of A Man for All Seasons so precisely as Dr. Usman Ogbo. His life—from an unassuming upbringing to the halls of governance and education—epitomizes unwavering dedication to principle, coupled with a capacity to adapt and innovate.

If past achievements are any indication, Dr. Ogbo will continue to serve as a unifying force—a bridge between generations, a steward of good governance, and above all, a man whose integrity endures, whatever the season.
