Two former presidential candidates have commended voters in River State for their conduct in the local government election on Saturday.

The two ex-presidential candidates are:the Presidential Candidate of Mass Action Joint Alliance (MAJA) in 2019, Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies and the National Secretary of the Coalition Of United Political Parties (CUPP) Chief Peter Ameh, who is also a former presidential candidate.

Adesanya-Davies who is also a member of CUPP said the voters, CUPP and Ameh deserve commendations for their rugged fight in defence of democracy.

According to her, the conduct of the election was a victory for democracy. She commended the voters for defying all odds to come out and exercise their franchise.

Ameh, who also is a former National Chairman of Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and also praised the voters.

He said: “Today, the people of Rivers State made history by trooping out en masse to participate in the local government election. This remarkable display of civic duty has brought peace and prosperity to the state and country at large, reaffirming the principles of democracy.

“The success of today’s election is a testament to the unwavering commitment of Rivers State citizens to democratic values. Despite past challenges, they have proven that their voices will be heard, and their choices will shape the future. This triumph is a beacon of hope for Nigeria’s democratic journey.”

He stated that in a true democracy, the conduct of elections is the lifeblood of governance.

According to him, it empowers citizens to decide and elect leaders who will serve their interests.

“Today’s election has demonstrated that Rivers State citizens are eager to exercise this fundamental right. The significance of local government elections cannot be overstated. They provide an opportunity for citizens to elect representatives who understand local needs and concerns. By participating in these elections, citizens can influence decisions that impact their daily lives, from infrastructure development to social services.

“The people of Rivers State have sent a powerful message: they will no longer be silenced or marginalized. They demand accountability, transparency, and effective governance. This collective resolve has given the country hope for a better National election.

“Today’s achievement is a tribute to the resilience and determination of Rivers State citizens. It is a testament to their unwavering faith in democracy and its potential to transform lives,” Ameh said.

He added: “As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize the efforts of electoral officials, political parties, IPAC, opposition coalition spokesman whose unwavering commitment stood in the gap between the people and the aggressors, Joint Action for Democracy (JAD) and other well meaning civil society organizations who worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth process.

“To the people of Rivers State, we salute your courage and commitment. Your action today has: strengthened Nigeria’s democratic institutions; inspired hope for a brighter future; demonstrated the power of collective action and set a precedent for future elections.”

He said their r participation has proven that democracy can thrive in Nigeria.

He expressed optimism for a continued upward trajectory, where citizens’ voices are amplified, and leaders are held accountable.

Ameh said: “The successful election has dealt a significant blow to external anti-democratic forces that sought to undermine the country’s democracy. These forces had been deploying various forms of anti-democratic propaganda in an attempt to disrupt the electoral process. By participating in the election, citizens have demonstrated their commitment to democratic values and principles, thereby thwarting the attempts of those who sought to destabilize the democratic system.

“The resilience of democracy in the face of external interference is a testament to the strength of the democratic institutions and the resolve of the people. It’s a powerful message that democracy can prevail even in the face of adversity.

“However, the success of this election offers hope for democracy’s resilience and revitalization. It demonstrates that citizens can come together to reject anti-democratic forces and affirm their commitment to democratic values.

“By standing together and confronting these undemocratic elements, democracies can continue to thrive and overcome challenges posed by external anti-democratic forces.

“Once again, congratulations to the people of Rivers State for this remarkable achievement. Your legacy will endure, inspiring generations to come.”
