The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kogi State Chapter, has declared a 40-day mourning period and constituted an 11-man Central Planning Committee to oversee the condolence and burial activities of its revered leader and former Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, CON, Jakadan Sokoto.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an Emergency Meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC) held on Wednesday, 23rd September, 2026, at the State Party Secretariat, Lokoja, under the leadership of the State Chairman, Hon. Muhammed Sani Gambo.
The SWC said it received with great shock and deep sorrow the news of the passing of Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, popularly known as “Baba PDP”, describing him as a father, leader, political colossus, detribalized Nigerian, bridge-builder and founding father of the PDP in Kogi State whose tenure from 2003 to 2012 brought unprecedented development, peace and political inclusion to the state.
After extensive deliberations on the irreparable loss, the SWC commiserated with the immediate family of the late statesman, the Ibro family, the entire PDP family nationwide under the National Chairman, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara, the Government and people of Kogi State.
The communiqué outlined four major resolutions:
1. Declaration of Mourning: As a mark of honour and respect for the departed leader, the Party directed that PDP flags at the State Secretariat, all 21 LGA Secretariats and Ward Secretariats across the state be flown at half-mast from Wednesday until 40 days after his burial, in accordance with the party’s tradition of honouring its great leaders.
2. Constitution of Burial Committee: The SWC approved an 11-man Central Planning Committee for the condolence and burial activities of the former Governor. The Committee is chaired by the State Chairman, Hon. Muhammed Sani Gambo, with Hon. Sunday Olufemi Ibrahim as Secretary.
Other members are Hon. Yahaya Karaku, Hon. Paul Ukwenya, Hon. Anthony M. Akuvada JP, Hon. Yunusa Adazaki, Hon. Toluhi Michael Segun, Hon. Audu Siyaka Uhanaye, Hon. Esther Abimbola Soje, Hon. Igagu Idris and Hon. Saba Ibrahim.
The Committee is mandated to liaise with the family and the Kogi State Government to ensure a befitting burial for the late leader, with its terms of reference to be announced in due course.
3. Appreciation to Kogi State Government: The SWC expressed profound appreciation to the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, and the State Government for the prompt steps taken and for according the late former Governor a befitting State Burial. The Party noted that the gesture was a testament to Alhaji Ibrahim Idris’s status as a former Governor and an elder statesman who served Kogi State meritoriously.
4. Call for Unity: The SWC called on all PDP members, stakeholders and supporters across the 21 Local Government Areas to remain calm, united and prayerful as the party mourns its irreplaceable leader.
The communiqué prayed for the repose of the soul of His Excellency, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljanat Firdaus.
