What was planned as a 47th birthday celebration for Engr Bashiru Abubakar Gegu turned into a massive empowerment fiesta in Gegu Beki, Kogi Local Government Area, as the philanthropist and APC chieftain rolled out multi-million naira interventions touching education, health, sports, women and youth enterprise.
The highpoint of the celebration, which drew party leaders, traditional chiefs, women groups and youths, was the presentation of four brand new cars to beneficiaries, including the Deputy State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Kogi State, in a gesture that underscored Engr Gegu’s reputation as a grassroots mobiliser fondly called Capacity.
Beyond the car gifts, Engr Gegu approved millions of naira to stakeholders across the three districts of Kogi Local Government to offset school fees for indigent students, while also earmarking millions of naira to community chiefs in areas hosting clinics to strengthen medical care delivery at the grassroots.
In a major boost for women empowerment, 300 women drawn from across the local government received N50,000 each, amounting to N15 million to support petty trading and household livelihoods. Similarly, ten youths were empowered with N1 million each, totaling N10 million, to start up or expand their businesses.
The sports sector was not left out as Roki FC and Roki Stars of Gegu got N500,000 support, while Bako FC of Lokoja received N350,000 to aid their activities.
The beneficiaries and community leaders described the intervention as another demonstration of Engr Gegu’s commitment to lifting others, noting that the birthday will be remembered less for its celebration and more for the hope it restored to hundreds of families across Kogi LGA.
