There are Commissioners and there is a Commissioner with a difference. That difference is Engr. Bashiru Abubakar Gegu, the Kogi State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, a man whose name has become synonymous with service that touches the soul.
Since his assumption of office from Kogi Local Government Area, he has proven that where there is a will, there will always be a way. In the history of Kogi LGA and the list of Commissioners it has produced, living or dead, no one can claim to have beaten his record of excellent service delivery. His empowerment drive, without boundaries of tribe or creed, class or status, remains a watershed in the history of Kogi LGA and the state in general.
Come 17th September 2026, Engr. Bashiru will be celebrating his 47th birthday. Though young at heart, he comes with the wisdom of an elder, a Solomonic wisdom that can be seen in his political sagacity, administrative depth and human empathy.
He is a true leader in the finest definition of leadership, for a true leader leads and when he looks behind, he sees followers, not coerced, not rented, but organic, loyal and passionate, a followership that remains second to none.
For Engr. Bashiru, birthdays have never been about fanfare alone. He has turned his personal celebration into a festival of giving. It is on record that during one of his birthday anniversaries in Gegu Beki, he empowered 500 citizens of Kogi LGA with cash, 100 sewing machines, 100 pumping machines and 100 grinding machines, a gesture he described as his way of giving back to society as a product made by former Governor Yahaya Bello and Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.
One beneficiary, Muhammed Alhassan who spoke on behalf of others, showered encomium on him and described him as the best Commissioner Kogi LGA has ever produced, while Hajia Maimunat Iyami Shaibu Tatu, the political mother of Kogi LGA, prayed for his political success to extend beyond being a Commissioner.
On his 46th birthday, he raised the bar even higher. In a remarkable display of philanthropy that left the entire community agog, he distributed cars, motorcycles and substantial cash support to beneficiaries across the community, with the least recipient going home with the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira. It was unprecedented and it brought renewed hope to several households, from market women to farmers, from youth to widows.
And in his usual characteristic, beyond the fanfare and the colourful gathering of dignitaries which included the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Umar Aliyu and Hon. Danladi Aguye, member representing Kogi Lokoja Federal Constituency, the sick, the vulnerable and the less privileged are the greatest beneficiaries. While many celebrate with noise, Engr. Bashiru quietly pays hospital bills for indigent patients who would have died unattended, settles school fees for orphans, provides food and shelter for widows and extends lifelines to those whose voices are rarely heard. It is this silent, consistent kindness to the weakest among us that has turned his philanthropy from mere empowerment to true humanitarian service and endeared him to the masses.
You are truly a dependable ally worth celebrating, Asiwaju Asiru Idris, the Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning had said of him, describing him as a thoroughbred technocrat, a philanthropist and community leader whose commitment to the overall development of Kogi State has been outstanding.
The Executive Chairman of Kabba Bunu Local Government Area, Hon. Barr. Zacchaeus Dare Michael, also described him as a rare gem personality whose passion for administrative excellence is remarkable, an exemplary leader whose impact remains legendary.
Born on September 18, 1979 to Alhaji Abubakar Umar, the Asumehekaka of Gegu Beki Chiefdom and Hajiya Maimunat Abubakar, his journey from Kogi Zonal Education Board Primary School Gegu Beki where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1988, to Government Secondary School Gwagwalada where he excelled in sciences in 1999, to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria where he studied Chemical Engineering and graduated in 2009, to his NYSC with Taraba Gas Limited, to founding and managing Cyclo Energy Limited and serving as Consultant Engineer to the Nigerian Army and various other organizations, has shaped him into a man prepared for service.
Honoured with several chieftaincy titles including the Ondaki Irekwu of Igu Koton Karfe Kingdom, he has brought uncommon transformation to the Solid Minerals sector and made it a revenue beacon for the state. He remains humble, generous and fearless when it comes to the defence of the vulnerable.
At 47, Engr. Bashiru Abubakar Gegu stands tall not just as a Commissioner, but as a movement, a leader whose influence flows from empathy, whose authority flows from example and whose followership flows from trust.
