Come September 17th, 2026, Engr. Abubakar Bashir Gegu, the Kogi State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, will clock 47. For a man whose life has been defined by service rather than self, the day is less about personal celebration and more about taking stock of a journey devoted to humanity, community development, and the progress of Kogi State.
Born and raised in Kogi Local Government Area, Engr. Gegu grew up with a deep understanding of the struggles of ordinary people. That understanding has shaped every step of his public life. To many in Kogi LGA and beyond, he is not just a Commissioner. He is a son of the soil who chose to stay close to the people, to listen, and to act.
His tenure in the solid minerals sector has been marked by a deliberate push to open up the industry for the benefit of host communities. Under his watch, the Ministry has prioritized the formalization of artisanal miners, the promotion of responsible mining practices, and the attraction of genuine investors who will create jobs for Kogi youths while protecting the environment. He has consistently insisted that the wealth beneath Kogi’s soil must translate into roads, schools, and livelihoods for the people who own the land.
Beyond the office, Engr. Gegu’s footprints are visible in the lives he has touched directly. At 47, Engr. Bashir Gegu does not measure success by titles.
