The Council of Ulamau, Kogi State Chapter, participated in the Moderated Police Youth Dialogue organised by the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Command, as part of activities commemorating International Youth Day 2026.
The dialogue, held at the Kogi State Police Command Headquarters, Lokoja, was themed:
«“Youth, Security and Nation Building: Strengthening Partnerships for a Peaceful and Prosperous Future.”»
The programme brought together young people, security agencies, religious and traditional stakeholders, government representatives, students, civil society actors and members of the media to deliberate on the role of youths in promoting peace, security, responsible citizenship and sustainable development.
Islamic Perspective on Youth, Security and Nation Building
Speaking from the Islamic perspective, Ustaz Idris Al-Madany, Esq., emphasised that Islam regards young people as important assets and active partners in building peaceful, secure and prosperous societies.
He encouraged youths to pursue beneficial knowledge, acquire legitimate skills, embrace productive ventures and reject criminality, violence, drug abuse and other social vices capable of undermining the peace and development of society.
Ustaz Idris further stressed that security is a collective responsibility, requiring effective cooperation among youths, security agencies, parents, religious leaders, traditional institutions, government and the wider community.
He also urged security personnel to discharge their responsibilities with justice, fairness, professionalism and respect for the dignity and fundamental rights of citizens, noting that public trust and effective policing are strengthened through mutual respect and cooperation.
Youths as Partners in Security and Development
The Executive Chairman of Lokoja Local Government Council, Comrade Abdullahi Adamu, also urged young people to take active responsibility for peace, security and national development.
He advocated stronger collaboration between youths and security agencies, stressing that young people have a significant role to play in promoting peace and preventing crime within their communities.
Comrade Adamu also commended the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, for initiatives aimed at strengthening Police-community relations and creating opportunities for greater engagement between the Police and members of the public.
Stakeholders Call for Greater Police-Community Cooperation
Other stakeholders, including a representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), government agencies, students and members of the media, also contributed positively to the dialogue.
The speakers encouraged young people to develop a constructive relationship with the Police and other security agencies, particularly by supporting legitimate intelligence-gathering efforts.
They emphasised that timely and credible information from members of the public can assist security agencies in preventing crime, responding effectively to security threats and creating safer communities.
The stakeholders also encouraged youths to avoid activities that could threaten public peace and instead become responsible citizens who contribute positively to the development of their communities.
Police Command Reaffirms Commitment to Youth Engagement
In his response, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, appreciated the Council of Ulamau and all participating stakeholders for their contributions and continued support towards peace and security in the state.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening Police-community relations and encouraged young people and other members of the public to engage constructively with the Police.
He stated that the Command remains open to youth engagement, participation and constructive dialogue, noting that meaningful partnership with young people is essential to addressing security challenges and building a safer society.
Call for Collective Responsibility
The Council of Ulamau also called on parents, community leaders and other stakeholders to revive the culture of collective responsibility in the upbringing and moral development of children and young people.
The Council stressed that youth development and security should not be left to government or security agencies alone, but should be approached as a shared responsibility involving families, communities, religious institutions, traditional institutions, government and the youths themselves.
The Council therefore urged society to view young people not as a security challenge, but as essential partners in promoting peace, security, development and nation building.
The Council of Ulamau, Kogi State Chapter, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting constructive engagements and initiatives that promote peaceful coexistence, responsible citizenship, youth development, community security and sustainable development.
