The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yekini Idiaye, to immediately halt the move by the State House of Assembly to repeal or amend the Edo State House of Assembly and Judiciary Autonomy Law 2021.
Edo NLC described the move by the new leadership of the House of Assembly to ticker with the State House of Assembly and Judiciary Autonomy Law as unpopular, inconceivable, and anti-constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In the statement signed by its Chairman, Prof. Monday Lewis Igbafen, the Caretaker Committee of Edo NLC warned that it would not hesitate to collaborate with critical stakeholders in the State to resist the amendment.
The Edo State Council of NLC maintained that it viewed the development as a dangerous setback to the struggle for financial and administrative autonomy of the legislature and judiciary in country.
Edo NLC maintained that any subterfuge attempts to undermine the autonomy of the legislature and judiciary in the State, and by extension, our present democracy would be repressed by the collective will of the people.
The Nigerian Post recalls that the State wing of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), on Wednesday protest the obnoxious process of amendment of the autonomy law.
The Edo NLC expressed solidarity with the members of the State wing of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) in protesting the obnoxious process of amendment of the autonomy law.
Edo NLC insisted that “any Bill seeking to amend or ticker with the autonomy law that would compromise the independence of the Judiciary and Legislature MUST be resist” because if not checked, the control of the purse and personnel of the judiciary and legislature by the executive is antithetical to judicial and legislative impartiality in the State.
