There are moments in the life of an institution that transcend the ordinary, moments that redefine what is possible and set a new standard for generations to come.
The emergence of Prof. Ejiroghene Martha Umuerri as Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Delta State University, Abraka, is one such moment. In becoming the first woman to hold that office, Prof. Umuerri has not merely assumed a position; she has opened a door that will never again be closed.
The Delsu Medical School Alumni Association (DUMSAA), under the leadership of its President, Dr. Kennedy Oberhiri Obohwemu, joins the wider academic community and the people of Delta State in celebrating this extraordinary achievement. For DUMSAA, however, this celebration carries a particularly personal and profound resonance.
Prof. Umuerri holds a special place in the heart of the association. An Honorary Member of DUMSAA, she has by virtue of her election now assumed the role of statutory Patron of the association, a distinction that the entire DUMSAA family receives with great pride and enthusiasm.
Her relationship with DUMSAA has been one of genuine engagement and mutual respect, most memorably demonstrated when she graciously accepted the association’s invitation to serve as Guest Speaker at its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM).
On that occasion, she held an audience of accomplished medical professionals and alumni in rapt attention, delivering an address that was at once intellectually stimulating, deeply inspiring, and a powerful affirmation of the values that bind the DUMSAA family together. Few who were present that day would have been surprised by the news of her historic emergence that was to follow.
For the association, the journey from that memorable virtual gathering to this landmark appointment tells its own story, a story of a woman of exceptional gifts whose rise was not a matter of chance but of character, competence, and an unyielding commitment to the advancement of health sciences education.
Dr. Kennedy Oberhiri Obohwemu, President of DUMSAA, spoke with evident emotion and pride:
*”It is difficult to find words adequate to the moment, but let me try. When we invited Prof. Umuerri to address us at our 2025 AGM, we did so because we recognised in her a leader of rare distinction. What we did not anticipate was that we were, in a sense, hosting a future Provost, and indeed a history maker. Her emergence as the first female Provost of the College of Health Sciences is a triumph that belongs not only to her, but to every woman who has ever been told that the heights of academic leadership are beyond her reach. Prof. Umuerri has answered that falsehood with the most eloquent of responses, her appointment. DUMSAA salutes her, celebrates her, and commits to standing with her every step of the way as she writes this new and glorious chapter.”*
As Prof. Umuerri steps into this historic role, DUMSAA extends to her its warmest congratulations and its most sincere wishes for a tenure that is impactful, fulfilling, and worthy of the trailblazing legacy she has already begun to build. The College of Health Sciences, Delta State University, and the entire academic community stand to be enriched by her leadership, and DUMSAA will be watching with pride every step of the way.
