The National Population Commission , Edo State on Friday launched the digital birth and death registration ( e-CRVS), in Edo State.
Launching the e_registration, the Edo State Commissioner, Dr. Tony Aiyejina said, ” It will significantly reduce delays in processing registrations, eliminate the challenges associated with paper records, minimise human errors, improve data accuracy, enhance the security of records, prevent duplication and fraud, and make retrieval of records easier and faster.
According to the federal Commissioner, the digital registration started from 1st July 2026, “civil registration of births and deaths has completely migrated from the traditional paper-based system to a fully digital platform as Manual registration using paper forms has now been discontinued. ”
Every birth and death registration he said will henceforth be processed electronically through the Virtual Records Platform, making the entire process faster, more secure, more transparent and more reliable.
He further said the digital registration will strengthen national identity management, improve demographic planning, support healthcare delivery, education planning, social welfare programmes and evidence-based policy formulation.
Aiyejina further stated that, the availability of credible and timely vital statistics will greatly assist governments at all levels in planning for infrastructure, education, healthcare, housing, employment and other critical sectors. Reliable birth and death data are indispensable for national development, sustainable economic planning and the effective allocation of public resources.
“For the first time, Nigerians living abroad will have the opportunity to initiate the registration process through a secure self-service platform from anywhere in the world, thereby strengthening access to essential civil registration services regardless of location”.
He called on all parents, guardians, healthcare providers, traditional institutions, religious organisations, community leaders and all relevant stakeholders to embrace this new digital system by ensuring that every birth and every death is promptly registered.
The commissioner added that, “the Civil registration is not merely a legal obligation; it is the foundation for protecting individual identity and ensuring that every Nigerian is counted in national development.” He stated.
He commended the Chairman, Commissioners, Management and Staff of the National Population Commission for their dedication and commitment in making the historic achievement possible. I equally appreciate our development partners and all stakeholders whose invaluable support has contributed to the successful implementation of this transformative initiative.
Aiyejina further assured that the National Population Commission is fully prepared for this transition. Our registration centres have been equipped, our personnel adequately trained and all necessary operational structures put in place to ensure seamless service delivery. We remain committed to providing efficient, courteous and technology-driven services to every resident of the state.
The commissioner urged parents, guardians, healthcare providers, traditional institutions, religious organisations, community leaders and all relevant stakeholders to embrace this new digital system by ensuring that every birth and every death is promptly registered.
He urged all Nigerians to take full advantage of this digital platform and support the Commission in making the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System a resounding success.
As to build a more efficient, inclusive and technologically advanced civil registration system that meets international standards and positions Nigeria for sustainable national development.
