The Edo Broadcasting Service, EBS, under the leadership of the Acting Managing Director, Festus Alenkhe, has received widespread commendation for its comprehensive live coverage and incisive analysis of the just-concluded Local Government elections in Edo State.
Throughout the election day, EBS TV provided uninterrupted real-time updates from polling units and collation centres across the 18 local government areas, ensuring that viewers across the state and beyond were kept abreast of developments as they unfolded.
In a bid to deepen public understanding of the electoral process, the station also featured erudite university lecturers, political analysts and governance experts in its studio. The scholars provided top-notch commentary, context and analysis of the election throughout the day, a development that was widely applauded by viewers.
The high point of the coverage was the live transmission of the confirmation and announcement of results from the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, EDSIEC, headquarters in Benin City. The broadcast was viewed by millions of Edo people at home and in the diaspora, and was described as a major boost to transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
Speaking with our correspondent, some respondents commended the management of EBS for its professionalism and commitment to public service during the exercise.
The Coordinator of Rights Guard, Comrade Pius Ehigiamusoe, urged the management of EBS to continue with the right trend and sustain the tempo of objective and people-oriented broadcasting.
Another resident of Benin City, Dr. Lukeman Braimah described the development as a welcome initiative and encouraged Mr. Festus Alenkhe to keep up the good work.
The respondents also commended the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for appointing Mr. Alenkhe as Acting Managing Director of EBS. They described the appointment as “a round peg in a round hole” and expressed optimism that the station would continue to set new standards in broadcast journalism under his leadership.
