Education remains the most powerful tool for lifting individuals and communities out of poverty. When a leader chooses to invest in students, he is not just paying school fees, he is investing in the future of Kogi State. That was exactly what our principal, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Kogi State, did during the recent book launch at Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.
Engr. Bashiru Gegu personally sponsored 20 indigenous students of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja with full scholarships. The gesture was unplanned for many in the hall, but for those of us who work closely with him, it reflects his core belief: that no Kogi child should drop out of school because of financial hardship. Those 20 scholarships mean 20 dreams rescued, 20 families given breathing space, and 20 futures now secured.
Speaking to beneficiaries after the announcement, the Commissioner charged the students to be of good conduct and to remain worthy ambassadors of their families and the institution. “Education is the greatest inheritance any parent or leader can give you. Take your studies seriously and make Kogi proud,” he told them. It was simple advice, but it carried the weight of expectation and belief.
As his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, I have watched Engr. Bashiru Gegu support students, youths, and widows consistently since he assumed office — a gesture of which I am also a beneficiary. This sponsorship of 20 students is another proof that his commitment to human capital development is not just talk, it is action. He does not wait for budgets to catch up with needs. When he sees a gap, he steps in.
On behalf of the 20 beneficiaries, their parents, and thousands of students across Kogi State, I say a big thank you to my principal, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, popularly known as Sarkin Yaki Kogi State. Your intervention came at a time when many families are struggling with economic challenges, and it will go a long way in securing the academic future of these 20 students. The relief on their parents’ faces said more than words ever could.
I also urge you, sir, not to relent in initiating and supporting schemes that benefit students. Kogi youths are watching, and your example is inspiring a new generation to believe that government can work for the common man. The ripple effect of these 20 scholarships will be felt for decades as these students graduate, secure jobs, and give back to society.
Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja has produced great minds, and with leaders like Engr. Bashiru Gegu sponsoring students directly, we are confident that more Kogi children will rise to national and global prominence. Once again, congratulations to the 20 beneficiaries.
