Kawu Emerges PDP Governorship Candidate, Urges Unity for 2027 Kwara Battle
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has officially announced Engr. Sulaiman Bolakale Kawu as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections following a primary election that produced a landslide result in his favour.
The declaration, made at the party secretariat, came after collation of results from all 193 wards across the 16 local government areas of Kwara State, where Kawu reportedly polled 98,998 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ladi Hassan, who scored 2,125 votes. The announcement was made by the chief returning officer, Sen. Duro Faseyi, who commended party leaders and aspirants for their conduct during the exercise.
Faseyi also praised the role of the PDP leadership in the state, particularly acknowledging the contributions of a former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, for what he described as sustained support for the party’s structure and development. He further lauded other aspirants for their sportsmanship, noting that their conduct reflected internal party maturity ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reacting after his emergence, Kawu called for unity among party members, urging stakeholders across the state to close ranks and work collectively to secure victory in the next general election.
“We want a government that cares and works for everybody regardless of political differences, religion and ethnicity,” he said.
He added, “I congratulate all party leaders, executives, parents, supporters and members across every ward and local government. Let us come together and move forward as one united family.”
Kawu stressed that only a united PDP could build a strong political structure capable of delivering people-centred governance in the state, adding that the party must remain focused on inclusiveness and service delivery.
“We believe this united party is ready to move Kwara forward with compassionate and people-focused leadership,” he stated.
The PDP governorship flagbearer also assured supporters that his administration, if elected, would prioritise the welfare of citizens across all backgrounds, while urging continued prayers and commitment to the party’s success.
The state chairman of the party, Isa Adamu Bawa, also commended stakeholders and aspirants for their peaceful conduct during the primary, describing the exercise as a sign of renewed strength within the party.
The emergence of Kawu comes amid rising political activities in Kwara State, especially after the All Progressives Congress (APC) confirmed the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Salihu Yakubu Danladi, as its governorship candidate for the same election cycle.
With both major parties now fielding candidates, political alignments are intensifying across Kwara State as stakeholders position for what is expected to be a closely contested 2027 governorship election.
