Ongoing CVR: Kogi State INEC Registers 200,000 New Voters, Partners WGGGC To Boost Women Participation, Inclusion.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Kogi State, Dr. Agundu Oliver Tersoo, has announced that 200,000 persons have been registered in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration exercise in the state. Of this number, 120,000 are female, while 82,000 are male.
The REC made this disclosure when he received Women Electoral Engagement and Governance Coalition (WEEGC) on advocacy in his office, seeking improved inclusivity and participation of women in the electoral process and ending violence against women in elections in Kogi State.
He noted that the number of registered female voters is encouraging and urged women to take advantage of their population to make their voices heard.
Dr. Tersoo restated the commitment of Kogi INEC to promoting inclusivity, citing monetization of the political space and violence as major factors affecting women’s participation in politics.
He described the WEEGC’s advocacy topic, “A call for zero tolerance for violence against women,” as apt and praised the organization for its efforts.
The REC also supported the call for special seats for women in politics, expressing optimism that the request would be granted soon.
He pledged to advance inclusivity and support people with disabilities, disclosing that work has begun on gathering data to ensure their inclusion in the electoral process.
Dr. Tersoo urged women to register and participate in the coming elections, assuring them of support and security. He noted that the ongoing registration has entered its next phase, with additional machines received and deployed to registration centers.
Eunice Agbogun of WEEGC lamented the decline in women’s inclusion in politics, urging for improved inclusivity and participation.
She emphasized the need for women to have equal voices, stating that democracy thrives when women are included in all stages of the electoral process and governance.
