Okporojo Killings: Gov Nwifuru Relaxes Amasiri Curfew, Suspects To Face Prosecution

The Governor of Ebonyi State Chief Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has relaxed the curfew imposed in Amasiri community, Afikpo Local Government Area of the state, following the killings, beheading and destruction of properties in Okporojo Edda Local Government and Akpoha in Afikpo LGA after the arrest of some suspects by security agencies.
The Governor announced this while briefing newsmen after security council meeting involving security chiefs in his office in Abakaliki, the State capital.
Nwifuru noted that the suspects who were arrested and detained in connection with the Killings would be charged to court without delay, saying that schools in the area remain closed pending the determination and conclusion of investigations to forestall further occurrence.
He hinted that the curfew will now run from 6:00 pm to 7:00 am daily instead of previous 2pm to 10am.
According to the Governor, the Ebonyi security council met today “At the meeting, the Council reviewed the curfew earlier imposed on the Amasiri Autonomous Community.
“After careful deliberation and consideration of ongoing investigations, as well as progress made by security agencies, the Council adjusted the curfew to run from 6:00 pm to 7:00 am daily.
“The Council deliberated on key measures required to restore total normalcy to Amasiri, Okporojo, and Akpoha autonomous communities.
“It resolved that urgent steps must be taken to demonstrate the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
“The Council further agreed that all persons arrested in connection with the crisis between the affected communities should be charged to court without delay, rather than remaining in police custody.
“A lot of people have been arrested in connection with the killings. Some of them came to this Security Council meeting from detention to provide information; they were brought from their cells to speak to us.
“We are also reaching out to those who are not in custody to ensure they are apprehended as well,” he said.
“To further excavate facts surrounding the killings, the Council agreed to adopted more stringent measures for peace to return to Amasiri and Okporojo Community, soonest”
The Governor reaffirmed the commitment and dedication of his administration to restore permanent peace in the affected communities
