LEADERSHIP, MERIT, AND THE FUTURE OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITY LOKOJA

In the light of recent reports circulating regarding the naming of the Senate Building at the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) after the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akinwumi Durotimi Olayemi, it is necessary to separate sensationalism from institutional fact.
I stand firmly with Professor Akinwumi because the decision to immortalize Prof. Akinwumi’s legacy was not a unilateral move or a “parting gift.” It was the result of a unanimous agreement by the University’s most learned professors, the Governing Council, and critical stakeholders. When the highest decision-making bodies of an ivory tower reach a consensus, it is based on a meticulous evaluation of growth, stability, and visionary leadership.
While a few anonymous voices may choose to hide in the dark and throw tantrums into the public space, their dissent cannot outweigh the tangible progress witnessed during this administration. Transformation is often met with resistance, but the physical and academic expansion of FUL under Prof. Akinwumi is a reality that no headline can obscure.
I believe renaming the Senate Building is more than just a gesture; it is a “welcome development” that reflects the heartbeat of the university community. It serves as a bridge for posterity—ensuring that the era of foundational growth and excellence is remembered.
Progress should be celebrated, not vilified.
We must choose to validate the collective wisdom of the University’s leadership over the grievances of a handful of detractors. Professor Akinwumi’s footprints are etched in the soil of Lokoja & for me ,naming a building after him simply puts that reality into stone.
