Sun Award/Honorary Doctorate:I’m filled with joy receiving two major awards same day – Governor Otu
The Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Prince) Bassey Otu, has expressed great joy and satisfaction over his conferment as Governor of the Year and the Honorary Doctorate Degree in Humanities bestowed on him.
Both events held on Saturday, January 31, 2026. While the Governor of the Year Award was conferred on him by the Sun Newspaper in Lagos, he received the Honorary Doctorate Degree from Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Adamawa State.
Reacting to the two prestigious honours, believed to be well-deserved, Otu, rated as one of the top performing Nigerian governors full of vim and actions, said in a post on his Facebook page:
“Yesterday (Saturday) was quite a day!
“I was filled with joy and gratitude to receive two major awards on the same day.
An Honorary Doctorate from Modibbo Adama University, Yola, and The Sun Newspaper Governor of the Year Award, which beautifully capped the moment.
“It was truly humbling to see our efforts in Cross River State recognised at the national level. These honours remind me that the work we are doing is being seen and that we must keep pushing forward.
“I dedicate both awards to the good people of Cross River State, at home and in the diaspora, and to everyone working with us to move our state ahead. This is our shared achievement.
“I sincerely thank The Sun Newspaper for the Governor of the Year Award.
Beyond the applause, it’s a clear call to do more, serve better, and stay focused.
“Your love and encouragement mean so much to me. I’m refreshed, motivated, and ready to keep building a greater Cross River State, together.
“I am truly grateful to Modibbo Adama University, Yola, for honouring me with a Doctor of Humanities (Honoris Causa) during their convocation ceremony.
“This award is not about me alone.
It is a recognition of service, integrity, and putting people first in governance.
It reminds me that leadership is about responsibility to the people, not titles or power.
“I thank the Vice-Chancellor, the university management, staff, and students for this honour. I also appreciate my brother and friend, Prof. Afolabi Ogufekun, and everyone who stood with me on this special day.”
