Remedy for Water Pollution as Kogi State Government Intervenes in Ika Ajegu Community.
In a decisive move to address water pollution and improve public health, the Kogi State Government has intervened in Ika Ajegu community of Ankpa Local Government Area with the flag-off of a community water project, aimed at providing access to clean and potable water for residents.
The intervention, which is being implemented through the Kogi State Community and Social Development Agency (KGCSDA), is expected to significantly reduce the long-standing challenge of water pollution in the community, particularly arising from excessive mining activities in and around the area.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held last Thursday 22nd January 2026 in Ika Ajegu, the Senior Gago of the community, Chief Suleiman Hassan, described the project as timely and life-changing. He noted that access to safe water had remained a major challenge for the community, as most available water sources had been polluted over time.
According to him,
“Water has been a serious challenge in Ika Ajegu community. Many of our water sources have been polluted as a result of mining activities around us.
This project will go a long way in reducing water pollution and improving the health and wellbeing of our people.” He expressed profound gratitude to the Kogi State Government for responding to the cries of the community.
The water project was formally flagged off by the General Manager of the Kogi State Community and Social Development Agency, Alhaji (Chief) Momoh Dauda, who was represented at the event by the Operations Manager of the agency, Engr. Bayode Oladipo.
Engr. Oladipo stated that the intervention reflects the unwavering commitment of the Kogi State Government to ensuring that rural and underserved communities have access to clean and potable water.
He explained that safe water supply has a multiplier effect on community development, impacting health, productivity, education, and overall quality of life.
He further disclosed that the project is being funded 100 percent by the Kogi State Government, in order to reduce the financial burden on the community and ensure timely completion. “The government understands the importance of this project to the people of Ika Ajegu and has therefore taken full responsibility for its funding,” he said.
In her remarks, the Treasurer of the Community Project Management Committee (CPMC), Mrs. Salamatu Adejo, commended the Kogi State Government and the Community and Social Development Agency for making the project a reality. She assured the agency and the government of transparency, prudence, and accountability in the management of the project funds to ensure successful execution.
The water project is being funded under the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) 2.0 Programme, a flagship initiative supporting Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to inclusive development, environmental sustainability, and improved living standards for communities across Kogi State.
With the commencement of the project, residents of Ika Ajegu community have expressed renewed hope that the long-standing challenge of polluted water sources will soon be a thing of the past, further reinforcing the Kogi State Government’s people-centered approach to governance and development.
