Udama Kpai Unyogba Idah Development Association Mourns Passing of Veteran Journalist, Newswatch Co-Founder, Yakubu Mohammed.
The Udama Kpai Unyogba, Idah Development Association, has condoled with the Igala Community, Kogi State and the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ over the passing of Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, a renowned journalist and Co-founder of Newswatch magazine.
Mohammed, a proud son of Kogi State from Dekina Local Government Area, died at 75, leaving behind a legacy of fearless investigative journalism.
Udama Kpai Unyogba Idah Development Association, in a statement signed by the President, Hon. Paul Ukwenya, KSM, described Mohammed’s passing as a great loss to the journalism profession and the country.
Hon. Paul Ukwenya, on behalf of UKUIDA, recalled Mohammed’s days at Newswatch with nostalgia, noting his contributions to nation-building through fearless and investigative reporting.
Mohammed, alongside Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Dan Agbese, founded Newswatch in 1984, shaping Nigeria’s media landscape. His work promoted accountability and transparency, inspiring generations of journalists. The UKUIDA expressed condolences to the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mohammed’s family, and friends, including former Kogi State Head of Service, Alhaji Isah Ichaba, urged the family to find solace in Mohammed’s fulfilled life and legacy.
Mohammed’s impact extends beyond journalism. He served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Ahmadu Bello University’s Governing Council, showcasing his commitment to education and public service. President Bola Tinubu and Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo have also paid tribute to Mohammed, praising his courage, professionalism, and dedication to journalism.
Hon. Ukwenya described the loss to the Igala nation, said his loss has left a very big vacuum difficult to fill, console the Igala nation, media community and Nigerian’s in general.
The President described the deceased as a great player in the media profession. A well bred professional. Prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
