Women Lawyers have been asked to see legislative drafting as a veritable tool needed to remain relevant in the practice of their profession, for more inclusive, equitable, and laws responsive to women’s needs.

 

Barr. Bamidele Suru, made the disclosure
at the just concluded 2025 Workshop On Legislative Drafting for women Lawyers held in Lokoja at the weekend.

According to Barr. Suru, the workshop is organized to expose the women forum on advantages of being professional legislative draftsmen being a stressless arm of the legal profession for women in the profession.

The workshop with the theme: Legislative Drafting A Dependable Skill For Women In Legal Profession was organized by the
NIGERIA BAR ASSOCIATION WOMEN FORUM KOGI STATE CHAPTER with the MODULE, LEGISLATIVE DRAFTING AND TECHNIQUE FOR UNIFORM DRAFTING STYLE.

Legislative and Legal Drafting Consult Equity, disclosed that
Legislative drafting for women have several advantages for women, particularly in promoting their rights and interests.

The Senior Lawyer listed key advantages of Legislative Drafting for Women to include:
Promoting Gender Equality, enables the creation of laws that addresses gender disparities and promote equal opportunities.

Similarly, the engagement of women lawyers in Legislative drafting helps in Protecting Women’s Rights, facilitates the development of legislation that safeguards women’s rights, such as protection from violence and discrimination.

Barr. Suru urged the women to take the workshop seriously as it allows for the drafting of laws that cater to women’s unique needs, like reproductive health and maternity leave.

Similarly, having Legislative Drafting skills helps to increase representation, leading to more women-friendly policies and laws, increasing women’s representation in decision-making positions.

Barr. Suru explained that the benefits of Women having understanding in Legislative Drafting, helps Women bring unique perspectives and insights, ensuring laws are more comprehensive and effective.

Women’s involvement in legislative drafting Barr. Suru stated enables advocacy and lobbying for laws that benefit women, is reason for the training and capacity-building, so as to enhance women’s skills in legislative drafting.

By involving women in legislative drafting, Barr. Suru concluded by saying laws can be more inclusive, equitable, and responsive to women’s needs.
