2023 PRESIDENCY, MACRO ZONING Vs MICRO ZONING.

.

Politics of
succession is now the order of the day in the political space both in national and state level as president Buhari and some state governors will vacate their seat come 29th May, 2023 having served 2nd term in office. Nigeria is made of two major regions, North and South which gave birth to the current six geopolitical zones in the country.
In 1999, when democracy returned after the military interruption of Nigeria’s democracy south west geopolitical zone of the country produced the first president in the name of Olusegun Obasanjo, from 1999 to 2007. He was succeeded by president Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua from 2007 to 2010. He is from north west geopolitical zone of the country. Due to the sudden demise of president Yar’ Adua in 2010 his vice, president Goodluck Jonathan was sworn as the constitution demands. When Jonathan finished the tenure he inherited from Yar’ Adua in 2011, he contested and worn the keenly contested poll. Jonathan is from south south geopolitical zone of the country and served as president from 2010 to 2015.
In 2015, Nigerians elected Buhari as the president of the country. He is from north west geopolitical zone. In 2023 Buhari’s tenure will elapse having served from 2015 to 2023. Now it entails that the probability of north and south who has occupied the number one citizen of the country is 2:2.
The argument dominating the political atmosphere currently is which zone between north and south should produce the successor to the outgoing president come 2023? The south east region is making a case and agitating that the presidency should be macro zoned to south and micro zone to south east. But the story is not sounding clear to the south west as they are gearing up to go to the battle ground while speculation has it that the south south political bigwigs are not comfortable with the south east quest to take the mantle of leadership come 2023.
The northerners are also claiming that they should be allowed to occupy the seat again come 2023 as some from the region have declared interest to run for the office. The claim of the north is that what Nigeria needs now is capable hand and not issues of zoning. But the question some analysts are asking remains is there any region of the country that doesn’t have a capable hand to led the country?
Some analysts are saying that if the presidency is been zoned to south east it will cushion the tension of cessation been agitating by the region and also to ensure equity and fairness in the agenda of Nigeria. But they should work towards shaking hands across the Niger thereby lobbying their political counterparts from other region and fight for it because power is not given but taken. In the beer parlors, streets, motor Parks, television and radio programs amongst others the analysis of who occupies Aso Rock come 2023 is now the dominating discussions
