Leaders are born and leaders could be made, leadership qualities and abilities if not inbuilt through birth, would be learned through mentoring and long years of experience. Whichever way, leadership ability or leading people isn’t an easy task, it involves been pragmatic, firm and rugged. A good leader should be like a prophet, he/she must be clairvoyant, he/she must be able to project into the foreseeable and unforeseeable future and take an unpopular stand that the effect will be appreciated maybe not immediately.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state is an example of such leader, in his case, he was born a leader, he was also patient enough to study and follow elders who are great leaders; the result today is his ability not to only project into the future but to also not waver when he takes an unpopular decision which will birth a positive result for those he leads in the future.

In March 2020, at the thick of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic and when Nations, States and the Federal government were all locking down in serious panic, Bello though, knew the weight of the raging pandemic, he refused to press a panic button; instead, Bello took serious and analytical research and survey. He knew tough times don’t last, he knew only tough people do, he knew that the pandemic will subside soon, he also asks himself “what will become of the economy, how will people feed after the whole issue if we continue to lock down the economy”?

He {Bello] took an unpopular decision not to lock down his state, he threw himself like an eagle into the middle of the storm, he declared Kogi state as safe and free, he was attacked and maligned but today, the signs of hunger and serious economic hardship are there. Today, a lot of his governor colleagues and even the international bodies agree with Bello, that a more careful and meticulous approach would have been given to the pandemic. Today, governor Bello is referred to, as a man who sees tomorrow.

At the beginning of the long total lockdown, Governor Yahaya Bello had called on the presidency and his governor colleagues not to take a drastic or copy other foreign countries approach, he called for a national approach in which each state will map out her way of tackling the issue but he was labelled a pessimist, some even said he did not believe that the pandemic exists.

At that point, projectors of propaganda had gone to the press to shout themselves hoax, they called the governor unprintable names, they ask for drastic action from the federal government, they wanted a stiff sanction for Kogi state but Bello kept his calm and took them on headlong while also attending to other pressing leadership issues.

Regardless of the noise been made, GYB knew COVID-19 truly exists, he had assembled great minds and egg-heads, he had quickly put up fantastic world-class isolation centres all over the state, he had encouraged the people to either call or go for regular testing, he had also begged the indigenes of Kogi state to report for treatment if by any chance you feel the symptoms or you are tested positive of the virus.

On the other hand, what GYB did not do was refused to be dragged into the myopic politics of COVID-19. He knew it from day one that the future of the politics a lot of our leaders are playing over this pandemic issue will soon tell on citizens, he argued that we are a third world country with a high rate of poverty and serious challenges on feeding and employments, if truly we do not want a total crash in our economy afterwards, then we should not attempt to take the bandwagon approach. Isn’t it sad today that all that governor Bello feared are coming to reality one after the other?

With the biting and tough economy plus an increase in fuel, electricity tariffs and almost a fifty per cent hike in food prices, it is obvious that the economy is not doing well. It is obvious that with all the good programmes of President Buhari on job creation, agriculture and all, that singular sadistic bandwagon approach to the outbreak of COVID -19 has set the country back a few steps, what we now witness could be sadder than what we thought we had prevented.

Everyone seemed to now agree with Yahaya Bello, that agricultural activities, productions and few important economic sectors should not have been shut down during the pandemic. The reality that what we daily produce is what we daily take has now dawned on the majority of us; it now seemed that the little we had stored up is what we have either taken or maybe not enough to go round.

For a third world country where the president just gave priority to food productions to boost the economy, a total shutdown of certain sectors was needless and baseless; what Governor Yahaya Bello saw are daily becoming a reality, we will need a serious rethink and a drastic approach in other to get out of this serious untold hardship.

We need to declare a state of emergency on food productions and distribution, the hike in food prices although foretold by GYB is now becoming unbearable, God forbid we have a Somalia experience.

_The true mark of a leader is the willingness to stick with a bold course of action, an unconventional business strategy, a unique product-development roadmap, a controversial marketing campaign even as the rest of the world wonders why he is not marching in step with the status quo. In other words, real leaders are happy to zig while others zag. They understand that in an era of hyper-competition and non-stop disruption, the only way to stand out from the crowd is to stand for something special.”_

*Asiwaju Asiru Idris* has demonstrated the above quality of a good leader, he is not just a leader but a reliable personality and a ladder to success for many successful youths and the ages.
